EACH week our man KEVIN CRAIGENS lifts the lid on the opposition we’re about to face. This week it’s the team from north Glasgow who have been motoring…
ASHFIELD share their Peugeot Stadium with the successful Glasgow Tigers speedway team.
But they have their eyes fixed on a podium finish of their own this season.
Sitting third in West Region League Two, Ashfield are in a four-way race for promotion after Lanark United and Lesmahagow rubberstamped going up.
The Field took a big step forward with a 2-1 win over Annbank last time out. The Ayrshire outfit led at half-time despite being reduced to ten men before the break.
The second half saw Ashfield respond, with attacker Graeme Hearton and defender Paul Maxwell sealing the vital victory which leaves them a point clear of fourth-placed Vale of Leven.
The Possilpark side’s recent results have been a mixed bag though, having picked up seven points in their last five fixtures.
With 14 goals scored in their last five they will be looking to fire on all cylinders as they welcome a rejuvenated Newmains United.
Ashfield currently have two men with double figures in the scoring charts. Ciaran Friel leads the way on 13, with Saturday’s scorer Hearton two behind him.
Just like the bikes that fly around the track which surrounds their pitch, Ashfield are heading down the home straight in their quest for glory. The chequered flag awaits.
