IN SHAPE: Craig Gupwell reckons the new formation worked well (Photo: Emma Gibson)

CRAIG GUPWELL set out Newmains in a new fashion – then watched them wear it well.

He and fellow co-boss Paul Davies altered the shape of their team in the first game of pre-season.

It worked wonders as United triumphed over Gartcairn Amateurs thanks to a Michael Barton double and Josh Anderson strike.

Gupwell – who played at the heart of defence 0- said: “It was our first runout but we used it to introduce a different formation.

“On the back of last season we have identified where we need to improve and believe changing our shape and style of play will help us do that.

“The boys adapted to the changes really well and overall myself and Paul were really pleased with how the game went.

“We felt we controlled the game for large periods and managed the game really well. Both teams deserve credit for the way the game was played.

“Both teams passed the ball about really well and we wish Gartcairn all the best for the season ahead.”
