FRIENDLY: Larkhall Thistle 4 Newmains United 1

CRAIG GUPWELL reckons Newmains set their standards for the season in an hour against Larkhall.

League Two United impressed before the break and took the lead through Adam Robertson against League One Thistle.

The home side hit back later in the second half to run out winners but co-boss Gupwell was impressed with what he saw before that.

He said: “The game was a tougher test. It showed we are not far off the pace but we also still have a bit of work to do.

“We always knew taking friendlies against teams in divisions above us was going to be a difficult test but that’s exactly what we wanted.

“Results really don’t matter in pre-season and Paul Davies and I came away from the game with a lot of positives.

“Our performance for the first 45 minutes to an hour is now our bench mark as we caused problems throughout that period and looked really solid as a unit.

“As often happens in pre-season a number of changes disrupted the flow of the game and ultimately we lost a bit of shape.

“Larkhall punished us with a couple of late goals. I felt the scoreline flattered Larkhall a bit and if we can build on the first hour of the game I know we’ll go from strength to strength.”

United travel to Bellshill Athletic on Wednesday for their next pre-season game.
