CRAIG GUPWELL is ready to compete for a first team spot this season.

On Saturday he hopes to see other players who are just as determined to join him on the journey.

Newmains United return to preseason training this weekend as they look to build on the progress from last season.

Co-boss Gupwell appeared a handful of times as he shared management duties with Paul Davies.

But he’s aiming to make more of an impact this term and can’t wait to see how many others are too.

Gupwell said: “In the past the phrase “preseason” hasn’t filled me with too much joy!

“But for the first time ever I’m absolutely buzzing for it. Personally I’m in the frame of mind where I want to get myself fit and compete with the squad for a place in the team.

“I hope everyone comes back in the same mood as we want everyone to prove to us that they are determined to improve their fitness and compete for a place in the squad.

“We currently have in excess of 30 players in our group chat. Some are returning from last season and a lot have shown they are keen to prove to myself and Paul they are ready to come in and improve our squad.

“I’m looking forward to running the rule over everyone and hoping that returning early this weekend will give us a chance to decide on a settled squad and allow us to hit the ground running by the time the competitive games come around.”

United collected 18 points last term after finishing the previous campaign on zero before Gupwell and Davies teamed up.

Gupwell added: “At the start of last season we were in a no-lose position where all we had to do was gain a point to improve on the previous season.

“This season is now different and we have our sights set on taking that next step and pushing ourselves up into mid-table at the very least.”
