Keeper Aidan becomes academy signing No1

UNITED: Aidan Smith reckons playing for Newmains has helped him cope with Jack's loss

AIDAN SMITH has made history by becoming the first player to sign for Newmains United’s Under-21s team.

The keeper joins from Bellshill Athletic and becomes the first to put pen to paper in boss John Campbell’s new squad.

The side will play in the Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur League and Smith, 18, can’t wait for the season to get started.

He said: “I’m really happy to join the Under-21s. I will be playing at a higher level and I hope working with John  and the other coaches will make me a better player.

“I’m looking forward to playing with the other lads in what will be an exciting season ahead. I’m hoping to do well for the 21s and push for a place in the first team squad in the future.”

Campbell has been recruiting players through the summer after taking up the post at the end of last term and insists more signings will follow Smith.

He said: “It’s fitting Aidan is my first signing because he has shown boundless enthusiasm for the club since the first bounce game we organised.

“It’s also important to get a reliable keeper signed up early. I worked with Aidan for six months at Bellshill and I know he’ll be good for the team on and off the pitch.

“He’s not 18 until August but already he has experience within a juniors set-up at Bellshill as well as playing amateur football. He’s the first of many quality signings we will make.”
