Newmains net hat-trick of new faces

SAFE HANDS: Newmains' new goalie Martyn Meek

PAUL DAVIES hopes three is the magic number after Newmains’ triple signing spree today.

United have landed experienced goalie Martyn Meek, young keeper Jamie Mitchell and midfielder Steven Peat.

After veteran No1 Gordon Bruce quit the club last week Davies and co-boss Craig Gupwell acted quickly.

That saw highly-rated Meek, 28, join from Lanark, with Wishaw Wycombe’s Mitchell, 19, adding depth to the position after previously playing in the juniors.

Meek boasts vast knowledge of the game at this level, having also played for EK Thistle, Forth, Gartcairn and Vale of Clyde.

Peat, 24, has been training with the club for a few weeks and joins from Dalziel Amateurs following a spell at Bellshill juniors.

Davies said: “After last week’s game at Saint Anthony’s Gordon told us he was leaving.

“He had done a lot for us. We were saddened to see him leave and we wish him well for the future. But it was important we moved fast to bring in some players.

“Meeky is a an experienced keeper and has played very well at this level.

“Young Jamie looked really competent in our training sessions this week and can genuinely push for the No1 spot too.

“Peaty has been with us for a short while and has done well for us. We’re hoping he can bring something a bit different to the squad.”

All three will be available for tomorrow’s Ardagh Group West of Scotland Cup first round clash at Whitletts Victoria.
