NEWMAINS UNITED’s international weekend offer was just the ticket.

But their winning run was all too brief as they lost a 2-1 lead.

A bumper crowd turned up at Victoria Park on the back of the club allowing season ticket holders from all clubs in for free.

But the home side failed to build on their brilliant cup display against Whitletts Victoria a week earlier.

After going 1-0 down goals from Craig Scott and Paul Donaghy saw Newmains take a 65th minute lead

But they collapsed after that and Newmains needed keeper Martyn Meek to defy his old club.

Lanark also missed a penalty and lost left-back Craig Stark to a broken leg.

Co-manager Paul Davies said: “The match was overshadowed by the injury and we as a club are absolutely gutted for the lad.

“Performance-wise it was absolutely unacceptable and to be 2-1 up and come away with a 5-2 defeat was poor.

“We were poor defending in all areas of the pitch, poor in possession and second-best in every individual battle.

“The only positive from the game was the size of the crowd which came on the back of our advertising campaign.

“I’m sure there was enough in the match to keep the supporters entertained.”
