St Anthony’s

EACH week our man in the know KEVIN CRAIGENS delves deep into the background of the team we’re about to face. This week it’s the men from Govan…

ST ANTHONY’S might have a massive internet following – but Newmains will try to ensure they don’t get caught in their web this weekend.

The Ants landed a host of new followers since Italian giants Roma’s English Twitter feed picked them as their team to follow on Non-League Day in October.

They arrive at Victoria Park a massive 18 points in front of their rivals with three wins from their last five league games. Yet they’ve conceded nine goals in that time while scoring only seven.

Last time out they beat Vale of Leven 1-0 after top scorer Scott McArhur bagged his 12th goal on his 18th appearance. McArthur will have to be watched carefully by the United defence if they were to take anything from the game on Saturday.

When the sides met at McKenna Park back in November, The Ants triumphed 2-1 after Shaun Gallacher’s winner ensured Mikey Barton’s equaliser counted for nothing. Willie McGlone’s red card for a second booking didn’t help United’s cause.

If this week’s game goes ahead it’ll mark eight weeks since Newmains’ last home fixture, after a run of away games and call-offs.

Kick-off at Victoria Park is 2pm.
