Weather keeps United waiting

HAPPY MAN: Co-boss Paul Davies

by RUTH CLARKSON

PAUL DAVIES admits he was gutted to see Newmains’ opening day clash at Dalry on Saturday postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

A new drainage system had been installed at Merksworth Park three years ago but it was unable to cope with the weekend’s torrential downpours.

It meant United were kept waiting to kick-off their first season in the new West of Scotland League.

Co-boss Davies said: “We were obviously disappointed in the game being called off but when I opened the curtains on Saturday morning I felt that might be the case.”

The new WOSFL setup saw 14 teams withdraw earlier this month with fans unable to attend because of Covid rules.

United will now look to kick-off their season in Conference C with their first home game since March 7 this Saturday.

They host Lanark United (kick-off 2pm), who suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Thorniewood United on day one.
